If you have read my writings, you would already know I am a history buff. I have been trying to read up on my family from various sources. So, I thought I would write a short note on the Basumallick (Basu Mallick / Basu Mallik / Bose / Mullick) family.
In addition to history, my other passion is business, industry and commerce. So, this note will capture mainly the industrial aspects of the Basumallick clan.
The Basu Family of Mahinagar
The Basu clan originated in Mahinagar, Bengal and "Mallick" was a title conferred upon the family.
Radhanath Basu Mallik was a significant figure in the history of the Basu Mallik family, which has roots tracing back to the early 19th century. Radhanath was among the first Bengalis to learn English and engaged in trade with the British. He founded the Hooghly Docking and Engineering Co. Ltd. founded in 1819.
His grandson, Raja Subodh Mullick, also known as Subodh Chandra Basu Mullick, was a prominent nationalist and philanthropist, Mullick played a significant role in the Indian independence movement, supporting leaders like Aurobindo Ghosh. His home at 12 Wellington Square became a major centre for political discourse, frequented by notable figures such as Rabindranath Tagore and Bipin Chandra Pal.
Raja Subodh Mullick contributed a substantial sum of ₹1 lakh to establish Bengal National College in 1905. This college later became Jadavpur University.
The Hooghly Docking and Engineering Company started by Radhanath Basu Mallik became a significant player in India's shipbuilding industry. Over the years, it evolved into Hooghly Dock & Port Engineers Limited (HDPEL) and later merged with Cochin Shipyard Limited to form Hooghly Cochin Shipyard Limited (HCSL), which continues to operate today.
However, the most notable person in the Mahinagar Basu family was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
