I travel a fair bit and I enjoy cities a lot. One reason is that I love tokens of human achievement that I can see through architecture, cuisine and cultural imprints. Today, let’s learn a bit about the various architectures that are present around the world.
The most predominant architectural styles in the world include:
Classical Architecture
Classical architecture originated in ancient Greece and Rome and is characterized by symmetry, proportion, columns, and the use of materials like marble, brick, and concrete. It has influenced many subsequent styles like Neoclassical and Greek Revival. Famous examples include the Parthenon in Athens and the Colosseum in Rome.

Gothic Architecture
Gothic architecture emerged in 12th-century Europe and is defined by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses. It allowed for taller structures, larger windows, and intricate ornamentation. Notable examples are the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and Cologne Cathedral in Germany.

Baroque Architecture
Baroque architecture originated in Italy in the 17th century and is characterized by grandeur, drama, elaborate ornamentation, curved lines, and the use of light and shadow. Examples include the Palace of Versailles in France and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

Islamic Architecture
Islamic architecture developed from the 7th century onwards in Muslim-majority countries. Key elements include geometric designs, pointed arches, and domes. Famous examples are the Taj Mahal in India and the Alhambra in Spain.

Neoclassical Architecture
Neoclassical architecture emerged in the 18th century as a revival of classical Greek and Roman styles. It features clean lines, uncluttered appearance, free-standing columns, and massive buildings. Examples include the White House in the US and the Bank of England Building in Liverpool.

Other notable styles include Renaissance, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Modernist, and Postmodern architecture.

Each style reflects the cultural, technological and artistic influences of its era. The diversity of architectural styles worldwide showcases the creativity and innovation of human civilization over the centuries.
