Can you program your mind for happiness?
Over the past 20 years, scientists discovered that neural pathways of the brain change over time - the brain is dynamic, not fixed, as everyone previously believed. They named this idea that our brain architecture can change “neuroplasticity.”
Every time you associate a response, either positive or negative, to an action, you create a neural pathway. With every repetition, the pathway gets reinforced. Over time, that becomes the default response. So, “traffic” equates to “frustration” or “anger” responses and so on.
With training, scientists have now shown, we can literally rewire the neural pathways that regulate our emotions, thoughts, and reactions. This means we can create new neural pathways - highways in our brain - that lead us to compassion, gratitude, and joy instead of anxiety, fear, and anger. We can reprogram our brains’ automatic response, and all it requires (this is a simple thing...but not an easy one) is a conscious effort to build new pathways.

Vaccines for cancer?
Drug developers have been working for decades on vaccines to help the body’s immune system fight cancer, without much success.
Long before companies leveraged mRNA to fight Covid, they were developing mRNA vaccines to combat cancer. BioNTech delivered its first mRNA vaccines to people with treatment-resistant melanoma nearly a decade ago.
The purpose of a cancer vaccine is to train the immune system to better recognize malignant cells, so it can destroy them. The immune system can clear cancer cells if it can find them.
Personalized cancer vaccines like the ones Moderna and BioNTech are developing are tailored to each patient’s particular cancer. Last week, Moderna and Merck launched a large clinical trial in the UK of a promising new cancer therapy: a personalized vaccine that targets a specific set of mutations found in each individual’s tumour. This study is enrolling patients with melanoma. But the companies have also launched a phase III trial for lung cancer. And earlier this month BioNTech and Genentech announced that a personalized vaccine they developed in collaboration shows promise in pancreatic cancer, which has a notoriously poor survival rate.

Thought of the Week
“One can go on endlessly reading, discussing, piling up words upon words, without ever doing anything about it. It is like a man that is always ploughing, never sowing, and therefore never reaping. Most of us are in that position. And words, ideas, theories, have become much more important than actual living, which is acting, doing.” ~ Jiddu Krishnamurti
