A cement-like building material doubles up as an electrolyte in a rechargeable battery
Researchers in France and Spain have developed a cement-like material from a geopolymer and shown how it can simultaneously serve as a solid electrolyte in a rechargeable electrochemical energy storage system. ‘This is more than a battery,’ says Vadim Kovrugin, who worked at the University of Bordeaux and the University of the Basque Country. ‘It is a new material concept, where infrastructure does not merely stand still but can actively contribute to the energy ecosystem.’
Despite the challenges involved in embedding energy storage functionality into structural materials, Kovrugin notes that ‘with each step forward, we move closer to a future where walls and bridges are not just passive structures, but active elements capable of storing energy and monitoring their health – for example, by detecting the appearance of cracks or other signs of structural degradation.’

The dangers of AI
This may be a bit alarmist, but during an interview, legendary investor Paul Tudor Jones shared insights from a recent tech conference attended by prominent figures in various fields, including the creators of leading AI models. He highlighted three key takeaways: AI's immediate potential for positive impact in health and education, the rapid and increasing power of AI models, and, most concerning, that AI presents an imminent security threat to humanity within our lifetimes.
This concern stemmed from discussions revealing the intense competitive dynamic among companies and countries, which hinders collaborative efforts to address safety concerns. Jones recounts a chilling anecdote from the conference where a leading tech expert suggested that a catastrophic event causing widespread death might be necessary for the world to take the threat seriously.
Furthermore, a proposition that there's a 10% chance of AI eliminating half of humanity in the next two decades garnered agreement from several attendees, including all four AI model developers present, who cited the rapid advancement and accessibility of these technologies as reasons for their concern about potential biohacking and weaponisation.
